Core competences are the linked set of skills, activities and resources that, together:
• deliver customer value
• differentiate a business from its competitors
• potentially, can be extended and developed as markets change or new opportunities arise.
Competences are the ways those assets are used or deployed effectively, that is ‘what we do well.
Competitive strategy is about being different. It means deliberately choosing a different set of activities to deliver a unique mix of value’
The competitive advantage of an organisation is based on the strategic capabilities it has that are valuable to customers and that its rivals do not have or have difficulty in obtaining. Strategic capabilities comprise both resources and competences.
